Auschwitz, also known as Oświęcim, was the largest German Nazi concentration and extermination camp during World War II. It was located in Oświęcim, in the territory of German-occupied Poland.
Auschwitz became a symbol of the Holocaust and mass genocide, in which approximately 1.1 million people were murdered, mostly Jews, but also Poles, Romani people, prisoners of war, and other groups deemed “undesirable” by the Nazis. The camp was liberated by the Soviet army in 1945.
Today, Auschwitz is a place of remembrance and a museum dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and educating future generations about the atrocities of World War II and the Holocaust.
